Story Arc: Climax Creative Writing Benjamin Way 3-21-14
Definition: • The climax of a story is the most exciting part, where the protagonist confronts the major conflict.
Components of the Climax • Suspense / excitement • High stakes • Confrontation of major conflict • Resolution of major conflict
Suspense • The audience should not already know how the scene is going to turn out. • We should still be guessing about what’s going to happen, even if we know it’s one of two outcomes.
High Stakes • The success or failure of the protagonist should have major repercussions for the protagonist (and others). • The audience should know exactly what is at stake for the characters with all possible outcomes.
Confrontation of Major Conflict • During the climax of the story, the protagonist must come face to face with their main obstacle and attempt to solve/complete/achieve it.
Resolution of main conflict • The protagonist should succeed or fail during the climax of the story. • Everything after the conflict is resolved just tells the story about the consequences of that resolution.
Review • Climax of a story should: • Be suspenseful and exciting • Have high stakes for the characters • Show the protagonist confronting the main conflict • Show the success or failure of the protagonist against the main conflict
