Objectives • Technical stop at the end of the year is foreseen to last 13 weeks, from Dec. 8th to March. 7th • Our goals are : • to open and close the 2 sides of the experiment • to participate to the installation and maintenance activities • 2 high priority activities : • to grant access to the 4 calorimeter faces (Barrel + End caps) • To reach LAr and Tile components, on both sides • to install EE muon chambers • Goal = install as many chambers as possible • Schedule constrains A challenging but realistic goal is to complete Side C • Many other activities will run in parallel, we are involved in several of them : • Maintenance and consolidation of the Magnets (bus bar + some maintenance) • Access improvement • Movement system upgrade (“JF nuts”) • Sniffers maintenance • Other safety systems…
Baseline of Time schedule Start opening Opening / 2 shifts period Xmas break : 5 days are worked, rest from 24/12 to 01/12 EE installation : based on normal hours with some extended day when necessary Closing / 2 shifts period End of Technical Stop
Main outcomes • Absolute priority is given to side C, • to be able to start EE installation as soon as possible • to be able to give access to calorimeters side C on Dec. 23rd • Access to Barrel and End cap calorimeters is granted for 4-5 weeks • We have to work 5 days during the period of closure of CERN • As we did last year, we have to organise ourselves in 2 shifts during the week. • One shift on Saturday may be needed time to time • Reinforcement of the technical team is foreseen, support from some Institutes is under discussion : 6-8 tech. from JINR (Dubna), 3 tech. from LAL (Paris) • Like last year, it is extremely challenging in term of time schedule • very strong commitment of the people involved • highest priority given to the activity • the technical support team will be poorly available for any other activity during this technical stop • Despite the effort done to organize the work, “Flexibility” is the key word. • The installation of EE chambers, even if tightened, decreases the number of weeks of shifts • We can go for some training if you feel necessary to revisit it.
Some upgrades 1- JFC1 A&C are removed using the truck and movement system (as previously) They are put back using the new dedicated lifting tool It is a significant improvement that saves about 2-3 days of work per side 2- To move JFSL up and down a new automatic device has been developed in order to move the nut without manpower : it will be installed in January and hopefully used for the closing 3- Device to move the rails more easily in the trench (see Raphael’s slides)
Work organization • Baseline of work is 5 days/week, • Monday to Friday, 2 teams working in staggered hours in order to cover 15 hours/day • On Saturday, one team may work on a normal hours basis, but not every week end. • Crane drivers will cover the full period, either in two shifts or being on call, depending of the activity. • A very good coordination with RSO and RPE is needed, the RPE should be looked at as being fully part of the team so that they know when their intervention is required. • Safety shifts are organized too, on the same basis as last winter. • Good communication is also required. A new web page has been created where some information is already available and will be updated. • https://atlasop.cern.ch/shutdown/xmas-2011.php
Information and communication Example of instruction sheet The same folder of procedures than last year will be used. An instruction sheet exists for every task. It is linked to the procedure to be applied, but it is not detailed, it is a support to anticipate then follow up the actions. Every day a short meeting is planned between the two teams. A particular care will be asked to the 2nd team to let precise status for the team starting on the morning The procedures will be available in UX15
Shifts organization Many options are possible, each of them has advantages and drawbacks My proposal is to do the same as we did last winter
Manpower organization The baseline for the manpower organization during opening/closing process is unchanged, however any suggestion or comment can be studied. Movement experts : F. Rosset + M. Raymond + C.Sordé (as deputy) they will supervise the teams, at least for what concerns movement preparation and the movements themselves. Team of technicians : 17 technicians G. Akhperjanyan, P. Benoit, D. Bertet, V. Durastanti, C. Leboube, L. Rose-Dulcina, A, Yandyan are part of the teams involved in the opening process. Bode will reinforce the team too. M. Alves, J. Bonenfantand J. Dubois will join from LAL 3 technicians will come from JINR (from N. Topilin) : Sergey, Anatoly + new person 3 technicians are foreseen from JINR (from N. Zimine) : not yet known Charles Scalisi and Francisco LimiaConde will be involved in Sniffer maintenance and RPA service (Francisco), they may also participate through safety actions Michel, Raphaëlwill organise and supervise the work, take care of most of the heavy load lifting and lowering, organize relation with RPE and other systems ; Aboudand Marco may be required for support. In January, more support is foreseen for Sniffers (Didier, Fred) Teams dedicated to EE chamber installation, supervised by Giancarlo, will be built
