Energy Storage A Presentation for the Colorado Rural Electric Association October 28nd, 2013 RES Americas / Nordex
Who is RES Americas? • Colorado Based • Engineering, Procurement &Construction • Constructed 10% of USA Wind (> 6000MW) • 250MW in Colorado (Xcel) • Constructed > 100MW of PV Solar • Now constructing: • The Biggest Battery in the Province of Ontario (4/2014) • The 2nd Biggest Battery in the State of Ohio (2/2014)
Where Did RES Come From? – McAlpine Construction • 2012 Olympic Stadium • Torness Nuclear Power Station • RES Group / RES Americas spawned from 150 years of McAlpine Engineering & Construction experience. • Nuclear power plants, oil refineries, port facilities, the 2012 Olympic Stadium and more.. • World’s Largest Geodesic Domes • Nuclear Reprocessing Facility • London Underground 2013 Renewable Energy Systems Americas Inc. - Proprietary and Confidential
Utility Energy Storage in 90 seconds • Lithium Batteries based on electric vehicle production • New Technology Batteries (high temp, flow, aqueous Na) • Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) [non-fuel] • Thermal Electrical Storage • NOT AVAILABLE TODAY • NOT AVAILABLE TODAY • EARLY PRODUCTION • AVAILABLE • ~5MW Demo Projects – 2015 • Utility Ready Products - 2018 • ~5MW Demo Projects – 2016 • Utility Ready Products - 2019 • ~5MW Demo Projects – 2014 • Utility Ready Products – 2016 • Utility Grade Products Available Today • New ES technologies show great promise (RES is presently involved in 2 CAES projects and one Thermal ES project), but are mostly not available today, except as demonstration projects. • Because of the huge investment in Electric Vehicle batteries, lithium based grid energy storage systems are available and reliable.
How can Energy Storage Help CREA Members? • Distribution Deferral • Providing local power to defer the construction of transformers, substations, and new distribution lines. • Cost effectively handle incremental load growth • Same equipment can provide islanding / UPS capabilities • Providing 3rd Party Ancillary Services • CREA members are being charged for Ancillary services (regulation, spinning reserve, etc.) in Schedule 3, 5, and 6 of TriState and WAPA tariffs. These services can be provided through energy storage. • Members can avoid these charges through 3rd party supply. • FERC ruling 784 (a FERC Energy Storage order July 2013) makes this easier and more cost effective.
Distribution Deferral Transmission Transformer or HV line overloading? Inject energy storage power as required downstream of HV transformer Energy Storage Energy Storage Distribution transformer or 69kV line overloading? Inject energy storage power as required downstream on low side of substation. Energy Storage Voltage support needed at end of distribution line? Inject energy storage at load end instead of more distribution lines.
3rd Party Ancillary Services • FERC 784 (July 18th, 2013) • “Third-Party Provision of Ancillary Services; Accounting and Financial Reporting for New Electric Storage Technologies” • Schedule 3, 5, and 6 of Transmission provider tariffs. These services can be provided through energy storage, often at less cost. • TriState could own or contract these services less expensively, and pass on savings to members.
Final Words on Energy Storage • Energy Storage can serve several functions at once. • Several new low cost Energy Storage options should be available as utility products within 5-7 years. • RES can provide technical and financial analysis of any potential distribution deferral project. • Questions?
