  4. Definitions in the Communication Model • Context – environment where communication is taking place Includes: • Occasion • People • Task • Place (+/-) • Time • Relationship between communicators • Climate (tone)

  5. Definitions in the Communication Model • Sender– the person who transmits and encodes the message -encoding is putting the message into words, pictures, or gestures

  7. Definitions in the Communication Model • Channel – the method, or medium, used to communicate information Can You Think of some Channels of Communication? Examples include: • e-mail • Face-to-face • Telephone

  8. Definitions in the Communication Model • Noise/Interference – anything that disrupts communication • Physical (can be heard or felt) • Psychological (in your head) • Semantic (language) Noise can be Internal or External It can also happen at any point in the communication process

  9. Barriers in the Communication Process • A barrier is any obstacle that blocks communication • Attitudinal • Social • Educational • Cultural • Environmental

  10. Definitions in the Communication Model • Receiver- the person who intercepts the message and then decodes or interprets it • Decoding- interpreting or making sense of the sender’s message

  15. Intrapersonal Communication • Communication within yourself used to think about things, reason, and decide meaning • Includes self-esteem • All Communication begins at this level

  16. Interpersonal Communication • Takes place between two people and allows you to engage in relationships • After intrapersonal communication, you use this type of communication most often each day

  17. Small Group Communication Formal or informal communication between three or more people

  18. Public Communication One person communicating to many • Examples include: a teacher lecturing in class, a politician giving a campaign speech, a minister presenting a sermon

  19. Mass Communication • Distribution of messages to a large number of people by means of modern technologies • Examples of mass media include: *Radio * Magazines *Television * Newspapers *Film * Internet
