What we know about great online teaching and learning in a nutshell • Students and teachers must feel supported from beginning to end • Consistent navigational structure among courses (redundancy) • Clear and consistent course objectives and expectations from teacher at the beginning of the course • Constructivist pedagogy thrives – students own their learning • Students must be feel like they are connected to the teacher and each other • Multiple ways to access content and communicate with each other both formally and informally (BB, FB, Elluminate, SecondLIfe) • Good balance of synchronous & asynchronous learning activities
What we know about great online teaching and learning in a nutshell • Content should be presented in diverse forms and have the ability to be shared/edited when appropriate • Text • Video/Audio • Visual Diagrams • Animations • Assessment must be multi-dimensional • Quizzes/Tests • Research Projects with Peer Review (Group and Individual) • Collaborative Presentations • Journaling & Reflective Writing/Podcasting • Participation in Discussions (synchronous and asynchronous) • Single port of access to Real-time assistance and information on research, writing, technology, academic advising, registration, financial aid, etc. • Clear policies regarding participation, grading and communication with teacher
