Course Description • The class is conducted using a combination of interactive multimedia presentations, technology based simulations and demonstration using the guided inquiry strategy. • I encourage full participation by using hands on activities and peer collaboration for problem solving discussions.
Curriculum • We will be covering the following topics: • Newtonian Mechanics (10 weeks) • Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Physics (4 weeks) • Electricity and Magnetism (8 weeks) • Waves and Optics (4 weeks) • Atomic and Nuclear Physics (2 weeks) • 2 weeks for review before exam.
Lab Fee • There is a lab fee of $10.00 per semester to pay for lab supplies. • Payment goes to the bookkeeper.
Class Organization • This class is conducted using a combination of lecture, activities, and labs. Some of these will be computer simulations. • During class, students will be working both in groups and individually to complete assignments. • There will be a test or quiz at least once a week. • There is nightly assigned homework. This can always be found on my website.
Labs • Many of the labs in AP physics will be open ended. Students will be given a scenario, and tools, and will be asked to create labs. • This type of lab promotes thinking outside of the box, which will help them on the free response portion of the exam. • All labs write ups are required to be in a Composition book that students turn in.
Example of an opened lab • Lab 3: Projectile Motion • Objectives: To determine the initial velocity of a projectile and the angle • at which the maximum range can be attained. • Equipment: A projectile launcher and a meter stick. • Type of Lab: Open ended • Write up: Follow lab write up format.
Grading policy • Test/Quiz 50% • Labs 30% • Classwork/Homework 10% • Final Exam 10%
