History of the Shawnee • The Shawnee women raised corn, which was an important source of food for the tribe. • Some names of their clans are owl , buzzard, deer, and panther. • Shawnee ate mainly buffalo. • Dried pumpkin was a big part of the Shawnee food supply. • Tecumseh was killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe. • They lived in the Ohio River valley in southern Indiana and also the white river • In the past Shawnee hunters spent the winter trapping beavers then traded the skin with the Europeans. • Shawnee men carved spoons and pipes for special ceremonies. • Long ago the Shawnee made their homes in the lush, green forest of eastern Indiana. • Each year the Shawnee celebrate their traditions through dance and song

  3. History of the Miami • In 1680 the Miami settled in the St. Johns River. • The Miami Indians sign a treaty of paradise Springs near the Wabash county courthouse.

  4. Kickapoo • In 1770 the Kickapoo settled in the Vermillion and Wabash rivers • In 1809 the Kickapoo move to Kansas.

  5. Interesting Indian Facts • There were 23 Indian tribes that lived in Indiana. • The French and Indians lost against the English in the war about the land. • Indiana means “Land of The Indians.”
