D0 the Evangelism Math Planter: 25 Prospects + Core: 25 Prospects 50 People/Week • That is major gathering!
Early Church How did they grow?
Acts 1:8 Commission • Jerusalem • Judea • Samaria • Ends of Earth
Jerusalem Circle • Acts 2:41- 3,000 • Acts 2:47- Added daily • Acts 3:1- Awe, Amazement • Acts 4:4- 5,000 men • Acts 5:14- More & more • Acts 6:1- Number increasing • Acts 6:7- Many priests Acts 1-7: Good Growth
Acts 8:1 Problem • STILL IN FIRST CIRCLE! • Seventeen years later • Jerusalem church had become a closed network.
Major Networking Problem • As powerful as network evangelism is, every network has built in natural boundaries that work against the viral spread of the gospel.
Natural Closure • Most people have 40-50 people in their network. • Pastors: 75-120 • Introverts: 20-30 • Exception: POP • Person of Peace • Know everybody
Stark: Closed Networks • Most new religious movements fail because they quickly become closed or semi closed networks. That is, they fail to keep forming and sustaining attachments to outsiders and thereby lose the capacity to grow.
Rapid Closure • Small groups: Six months • Churches: 70 people • Core groups: Four-Five months
Exponential Growth • Successful movements discover techniques for remaining open networks. And herein lies the capacity of movements to sustain exponential rates of growth over a long period of time.
Open Networks How do you keep networks open?
Early Church • Acts 8:1 (NIV) 1 On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.
Mobilized Laymen • Phillip: Samaria (8:5) • Paul: Damascus (9:19) • Cornelius: (10-11) • Barnabas: Antioch (11:22) • Hinge passage: 11:19-21 • Unknown planters 11:20
Brutally Honest • Every time a new network was opened, there was a major battle. • Acts 6: Hellenistic vs. Hebrew widows • Acts 8: Jerusalem vs. Samaria • Acts 8:26- Samaria vs. Africa (Ethiopian) • Acts 10-11: Jew (clean) vs. Gentile (unclean) • Acts 13: Antioch vs. Asia Minor • Acts 15: Circumcision vs. Uncircumcision • Acts 16: Asia Minor vs. Europe (Macedonian)
Push-Pull Tension GOD’S SPIRIT GOD’S PEOPLE
Push-Pull Application • First battle: Yourself • To spend necessary time to prospect & network • Second battle: Your Core Group • One of your major battles will be to fight to keep your core group open and continually build new relationships with new people, outsiders, and new networks.
