Course Objectives: This course provides an introduction to religious traditions and their expression in our global context of pluralism and multiculturalism. This course takes a thematic perspective on forms of spirituality and conceptions of illness, health, healing and well-being. rels 120 - appleby
At the conclusion of this course: • students will be able to define and differentiate among the terms religion, spirituality, and health. • students will be able to demonstrate religious literacy with respect to the following religious traditions – Indigenous religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. • students will be able to demonstrate literacy with regard to spirituality and specific spiritual traditions. • students will be able to demonstrate literacy in conceptions of human health and well-being. rels 120 - appleby
Student Evaluation, 1st TERM Attendance = 10% • No missed classes = 10/10; 1 to 4 missed = 8/10; 5 to 8 missed = 6/10; 9 to 12 missed = 4/10; 13 or more = 0/10 Country Report OR Community Report = 10% of term mark (1 per term) • Due on date scheduled for class presentation Unit Portfolios for Hinduism (8 Oct), Buddhism (29 Oct), and Chinese Traditions (26 Nov) = 40% of term mark EXAM= 40% of term mark rels 120 - appleby

Unit Portfolios3 in 1st term; 3 in 2nd term Each Portfolio will have 4 short items – 2 to 3 pages for each item: • A personal spiritual assessment (individual) and specific spiritual practice (small group); • Reflections on a key element of spirituality within the religious tradition; • A visual portrayal and discussion of the relationships among spirituality, illness, healing and wholeness in the tradition; and, • A factual religious tradition in-class quiz. rels 120 - appleby
Religious Communities Reports Each student will be responsible for preparing one Global Country Report, and one Canadian Religious Community Profile Report You may choose your religious tradition for each report by signing up on the sheet in class. Each student will do one report in the 1st term and the other report in the 2nd term. All reports will be presented orally to the class and submitted in a written format on the date of your presentation. Each Report is worth 10% of your term mark Students are encouraged to work with a partner rels 120 - appleby
