What does economic engagement provide to us? • Objectives: 1) complete lecture on claim warrant data 2) discuss and understand what makes for effective evidence 3) explain how to put it together 4) come up with preliminary aff areas • I can • Finish notes on what an argument is, “Claim, warrant, data” • Go over the handout “Evidence in debate” and understand that I will have to make my evidence in this form • Preview the handout “db8 more…cx db8” • Review handout “stock issues” • Brainstorm with my partner for potential aff positions

Why? • Objectives: 1) understand how to cut cards 2) practice finding evidence and tagging it • I can accomplish the following objectives: • Go over yesterday’s notes • Apply the card cutting activity to make a sample case • Harms, inherency, solvency/advantages • Hand it in • Preview the 6 cards assignment • Go to the lab 240 and begin preliminary research – get evidence for my/our claims • Have Aff cards due Thursday – harms, inherency, solvency/advantages

Why? • Objectives: 1) assess cards 2) show case design 3) emphasize cooperative collaboration 4) work on a case based on one of the models • I can • Understand how the evidence fits into a case – see db8 aff mini-case handout – next slide • Have aff cards ready for tomorrow • Figure out how I and my partner will communicate our case stock issues for Monday for a class presentation! • Go to Lab 122 to continue working on case evidence • Save finished evidence to debate website and appropriate folders http://tiny.cc/affideas2013

  7. Easy Debate Affirmative Format I. Intro – attention getter and thesis II. A problem A. The harms of the problem – “bad thing” B. the cause of it (inherency) C. why it won’t go away or is getting worse – bad thing(s) will happen w/o change III. Another problem A. The harms of the problem – “bad thing” B. the cause of it (inherency) C. why it won’t go away or is getting worse– bad thing(s) will happen w/o change IV. A plan or solution to the problem(s) – mandates and planks A. Who will do it B. How it will be done C. What it may cost in money or time etc. V. Advantages to doing the plan – why change is good and why it is better for change than leaving things the way they are A. Proof that there are solutions that work B. Why/how those solutions are better than what is happening now VI. Conclusion A. restate the problem B. restate that there is/are solution(s) C. Strongly tell the reader that the solutions must be done NOW or else bad things will continue to happen – perhaps even the end of life as we know it D. Do it now to make the world a better place.

Tell why. • Objectives: 1) assess evidence gathered 2) review how an aff case is structured 3) review the structure of a case 4) lab to continue work complete aff cards • I can • Review a sample aff case and identify the parts of it and look at its structure • Form a case with my partner in a similar design – it will be 5 minutes + in length of reading • Be ready for Monday/Tuesday presentation of aff ideas
