Beer Hall Putsch • Putsch: revolt/rebellion, attempt to overthrow government • 1923 was a year of change for Hitler: • Her organizes a Beer hall putsch against the German government, at a beer hall • Rebellion is squashed, and he is arrested and sentenced to 5 years in jail for treason (=willfully harming one’s own country) • Normal sentence = death – why such a light sentence? • Judge = sympathetic to Hitler’s cause
Sympathy for Hitler • “Gentlemen, judgment will not be passed on us by you, judgment will be passed on us by the eternal court of history…”
In Jail • While in jail, he writes his memoirs, “Mein Kampf” (my struggle), a rambling book filled with hateful agenda • Conclusion: power cannot be gained through armed revolution, power can be gained only legitimately by mobilizing people (assembling – ready for active service) and manipulating democracy
Nazi Platform • Regain lost land from WWI • Elevate Germany to world leadership • Deal with the Jewish and Communist problem. Why? Germany did not lose WW1. It was defeated by the enemies within – Jews and Communists who sabotaged (crippled, vandalized, interfered with) the German war effort
