Sector Skills Councils • Work with employers, education and Government to make sure that their sectors can recruit people with the right skills for the job market. • Produce Labour Market Intelligence, support qualifications development and engage with employers. • Funded and licensed by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) and working closely with the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Skills Funding Agency.
Creative & Cultural Skills • Our sectors are craft, cultural heritage, design, literature, music, performing arts and visual arts. • Our goal is to enable the creative and cultural industries to reach their economic potential through relevant skills and training. • We work in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The UK Creative Industries • 66,900 businesses, 85% of which employ fewer than 5 people. • Highly qualified: 54% of workers educated to level 4 or above. • Far more qualified than the UK economy as a whole, where only 34% are educated to this level. • The average worker earns £8.60 an hour, compared with the total economy, where the average hourly wage is £8.69.
The Creative Industries - challenges • A community of small businesses, sole traders and start-ups • Highly attractive to the academically well-qualified with skills gaps in technical areas impacting on diversity and talent pool • Focus on the ‘art’ often at the expense of business, management and leadership skills • Long history of engaging with schools and universities and few links with Further Education
The problem • No history of non-academic entry routes into the sector – lack of diversity and loss of talent • Poor careers advice available to school students – over-supply of performers and artists • No culture of training and development in a fast-changing sector • No history of engagement with Further Education
