  1. This is how Reality Town works.
  2. 1. a “real life” simulation of how you manage your money for one month. 2. your goal is to pay your bills, while living within your income Reality Town is
  3. Everybody gets a booklet
  4. This booklet contains your1.Personal information (job, family, income)2. It lists all your taxes . and deductions.3. It shows you yournet monthly income
  5. Spendable or “net”Incomes Vary a lot.
  6. Playing the Game The first few pages describe your family and income. The booklet show you what choices you will have to make, and the bills you will need to pay for during the month (ie. Food, Rent, car etc) There will be tables around the gym for each of the expenses you bills will have to pay.
  7. 3. Get as many bills paid as you need to -- you may not have to do them all. The Goal is 4. Don’t spend more than you have . (If you make $1,400 a month, you can’t afford a $1,500 car payment) Have money left at the end of the month!
  8. Paying for you Expenses There are two parts of writing a check: 1. Writing the check 2. Entering the check amount in your register, this helps you keep track of how much money you have left.
  9. Continued: Visit every table that applies to you, and pay as many bills as you have /need to pay. (example, Pay child care if you have Children. If you run out of money - get a second job. Above all, HAVE FUN!
  10. Now, let’s practice writing checks. Write 4 checks to the companies listed on the work sheet
  11. Writing a check Use only a pen to write checks Write the complete name and the amount indicated. Fill in the date Using cursive, write the amount of the check Sign the check Enter the amount in the register Subtract the Balance.
  12. Start your Register 1. Write $ 1500.00 in the in the Household Monthly “Balance “ line. Subtract your Check Printing Fee. “
  13. Check Writing Practice Make sure you enter the amounts correctly and subtract each check from your balance on the Check Register which gives you the new balance. Never “Kite” a check for money you don’t have.
  14. Write out checks for the following amounts: 1. Credit Card payment $210.00 - Chevron Oil Co. 2. Month’s food shoping $480.00 - Smith’s Food & Drug 3. Car payment $250.00 - Wells Fargo Bank 4. Car registration/tax $250.00 - Utah State Division of Motor Vehicles
  15. When you are finished After you are finished Your Register Balance should be $320.00
  16. What will happen nextWednesday, 9 Dec Group 1: Will receive you booklet in Advisory, The first group will go to Coach Frietas’ during Advisory. This session will be over about at the end of 1st Period.
  17. Group 2 Group 2 will get your bookletain Advisory. You will be called down to the Gym just before the End of 1st period. You must have your booklet in order to get in to Reality Town.
  18. Bonus Come Dressed as your “Career” and you’ll get an extra $300. See one of the Counselors for you money!
