ETG - Objectives • Promote the development and implementation of clear and consistent bridge preservation terminology • Promote nationwide understanding and acceptance of bridge preservation as a component of asset management. • Streamline the analysis and presentation of bridge data to support the needs of decision makers, management, technical staff and other stakeholders to advance bridge preservation.

  6. ETG - Objectives • Promote the development and implementation of bridge preservation related performance measures • Promote the continued development of a technically competent workforce in bridge preservation • Promote and support access to research results

ETG - Objectives • Provide the needed leadership to ensure the continuous management of the bridge component of the TSP2 Research Roadmap • Monitor changes to laws, regulations, policies and guidance that impacts bridge preservation and identify impediments to advancing and improving the state of the practice • Foster an environment that promotes agency and industry innovation in products, processes, technologies, and specifications

  10. Bridge Preservation Definition Actions or strategies that prevent, delay or reduce deterioration of bridges or bridge elements, restore the function of existing bridges, keep bridges in good condition and extend their useful life. Preservation actions may be preventive or condition-driven.

  11. Systematic Preventive Maintenance

Examples of PM Activities • Seal or replace leaking joints or elimination of deck joints • Deck overlays • Spot, zone, and complete coating of structural steel elements • Installation of Cathodic Protection (CP) Systems. • Electrochemical Chloride Extraction (ECE) Treatment for decks and substructure elements • Installations of scour countermeasures.

  13. Examples of PM Activities • Removing large debris from channels. • Retrofit of fracture critical members • Retrofit of fatigue prone details • Application of concrete sealants, coatings, and membranes. • Bridge cleaning and/or washing service.

Bridge Management, Inspection, and Preservation National Conference • October 31 – November 2, 2011, at the Millennium Hotel - Downtown St. Louis • Three focus areas – Management, Inspection, and Preservation • Hosted by FHWA, TSP-2, and Midwest Bridge Working Group • Preconference Workshops on October 31 • Technical presentations and Breakout sessions
