  1. UV-measurements in Iceland NOG February 2012 Þorgeir Sigurdsson

  2. Issues • What is the UV-index in Iceland? • Is it of concern for skin cancer prevention?

  3. Ozone measurements The Icelandic Meteorological Office has since 1952 measured the Ozone column over Iceland. Daily measurements since 1957 Maps from Environment Canada http://exp-studies.tor.ec.gc.ca/e/ozone/Curr_allmap.htm

  4. A recent example29 January 2012

  5. Ozone and UV are monitored • The Met office monitors Ozone and UV measurements in the Northern hemisphere and publishes news occasionally • Example 12th of April last year: • http://www.vedur.is/um-vi/frettir/nr/2162 (Can be Google-translated into English, see next slide)

  6. The Met UV-meter • The Met-office has a UV-index meter in Reykjavik • Measurements are available since 2005. However the Met-office is aware that the meter may need checking. It does not publish the UV-index prominently. • http://ath.vedur.is/uv/index.html • An example is on next page

  7. Typical measurements • The example is typical for last summer (all days can be looked up) • Prediction max UV-index 4 • Measurements often lower than predictions Values are even lower than expected Is natural UV of no concern in Iceland? (ozone thinning only during winter months)

  8. Melanoma epidemic? • The frequency of melanoma has been increasing in Iceland as in all the Nordic countries, especially among young women. • Nordic cancer registries have noticed that the melanoma is increasingly appearing on the trunk of the body, indicating intentional sun exposure as the culprit. (Articles on melanoma in Iceland and Denmark have been published) • Five year smooth average on next page (Women under 50) Oulu, Finland at same latitude

  9. AmericanJournal of EpidemiologySeptember 2010

  10. UV-measurements by a dermatologist • Using inexpensive meters • http://www.hudlaeknastodin.is/page68/index.html • See an example on next slide • It has links on a paper published by Bárður Sigurgeirsson dermatologist, can be google- translated

  11. Some remarks • High UV-index in Iceland is only found in few summer months. • We need to verify maximum values during these summer months (4-7?) • Do we think natural UV in Iceland is of concern for melanoma prevention?

  12. UV Weatherstation

  13. 2012 IRSA Plan • Perform calibrated UV-measurements in Reykjavik this summer • Use our own meter • or the Met-office’s meter (in co-operation) • Report and conclusions before end of year • Thank you!
