  2. Secondary Math TextbooksProclamation 2004 • The SBOE released Proclamation 2004; however, funding for any proclamation is a decision made by the legislature. We will not know the status of funding for Proclamation 2004 until the next legislative session in 2007. TEA update for TASSP June 2006

Recommended High School Program for all • 2004-05 freshman class is the 1st group of students that must graduate with the RHSP • Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II • Districts may place students on the minimal plan only with committee approval • These decisions should not be made until the student is about to enter the Junior year • Decisions based on individual circumstances.   7. Considerations for Algebra II • Algebra II should not be used as a TAKS prep course • Undermines the intent of the legislature • Algebra II has only one PEIMS number • All TEKS for Algebra II must be taught to all students • Algebra II TEKS are non-negotiable TEA update for TASSP June 2006

  8. Considerations for Algebra II • Tracking is NOT encouraged • Assume all students will attend college and prepare them for this opportunity in the same way • The intent is a rigorous Algebra II course that will ensure student success in College Algebra TEA update for TASSP June 2006

  10. Mathematics Models with Applications • MMA course/TEKS is NOT GOING AWAY • MMA TEKS integrates Algebra I and HS Geometry content • MMA provides a “bridge” course for students to be successful in Algebra II TEA update for TASSP June 2006

MMA provides a “bridge” course for success in Algebra II ISDs use many different models/configurations to ensure their students’ success in Algebra II • MMA is a course that can have tremendous acceleration results through modeling when the appropriate curriculum is offered to educators and students TEA update for TASSP June 2006

MMA provides a “bridge” course for success in Algebra II One example is ESC Region 4: they work with many districts who have been successful with this type of curriculum • Students concurrently enrolled in Algebra II and MMA • Students enrolled in MMA to prepare for Algebra II as seniors • Many of your ESC math specialists have attended this curriculum training and are excellent resources TEA update for TASSP June 2006

  13. Support for TEKS Implementation • Monies have been identified to create TEKS professional development modules • PD is being created to assist teachers in implementation of refined TEKS • Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and high school TEA update for TASSP June 2006

  14. Teaching the Math TEKS Through Technology (TMT3) • The purpose of this project is to equip teachers to be effective and judicious users of technology as they teach to the depth and complexity outlined by the TEKS for Mathematics. TEA update for TASSP June 2006

Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics Across Texas • TEA, in partnership with the Office of Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching, UT Austin, Center for Science and Mathematics Education, is recommending grant awards for 2006 – 2007. Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics Across Texas • The purpose of these grants is to improve the academic achievement of students in mathematics through forming partnerships among institutions of higher education, local education agencies, elementary schools, and secondary schools. This partnership will provide high quality, sustained, and high intensity professional development focused on the education of mathematics teachers as a career-long process. Such process should continuously stimulate teachers’ intellectual growth and upgrade teachers’ knowledge and skills through activities that are founded on scientifically based research and aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Mathematics. Effects of TEKS Refinementson TAKS Grades 6-11 Exit Level • Spring 2006 tests did not assess skills/concepts that have been removed from the TEKS, i.e. narrower focus, limitations, etc. • 2006-2007 tests may include field test items that assess additional skills/concepts • 2007-2008 tests may include live items (for accountability) that assess additional skills/concepts TEA update for TASSP June 2006

End of Course (EOC) Assessments • Executive Order RP53 issued by the Governor • The development of a series of voluntary end-of-course assessments in science, mathematics, and other subjects currently assessed by exit-level TAKS, to measure students performance. • Geometry EOC will need to be developed • Algebra EOC already developed TEA update for TASSP June 2006

Geometry EOC • A field testing window for Geometry and Biology end-of-course exams is scheduled for April 23 – May 11, 2007. • These mandatory tests are planned to be administered exclusively online during this three-week window to students enrolled in either Geometry or Biology courses at the time of field testing. • Primary TAKS testing week: April 16-20, 2007 TEA update for TASSP June 2006
