  4. 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning • Rigor has been increased • Repetition has been decreased • Retention and application of content from previous years required • Vertical alignment has been improved

  14. Enhanced Scope and Sequence • Process is under way • Review and revision with alignment to 2009 SOL • SpEd and ELL reps will review and enhance lessons in September

  15. 2010 Mathematics Institutes Purpose…to provide • support in the implementation of the 2009 Mathematics SOL; • training in the vertical progression of content and pedagogy; • instructional guidance in content areas of greatest challenge; and • electronically archived training materials for districts and teachers for use as a professional development tool.

  16. 2010 Mathematics Institutes • Audience • District mathematics supervisors, instructional leaders, and mathematics specialists/coaches (4 per district?) • Dates/locations • Proposed for October 2010 • Proposed locations include Abingdon, Harrisonburg, and Williamsburg

  17. 2010 Mathematics Institutes • Proposed content areas • K-2 Number and Number Sense Development • 3-5 Patterns, Functions, and Algebra • 6-8 Patterns, Functions, and Algebra • 9-12 Functions and Statistics • Sessions will be archived online

  18. SOL Assessment Changes • AFDA assessment has been indefinitely delayed • 2009 field test items will begin in Spring 2011

  19. SOL Assessment Changes • In 2011-12, 6-8 and EOC SOL tests will include some innovative items in addition to multiple-choice – field test items will appear beginning in Spring 2011 • ePAT will be provided for innovative items

  20. SOL Assessments • Phasing out VGLA supt’s memo on criteria • Phasing in Virginia Modified Achievement Standard Test (VMAST) – Grades 3-8, Alegbra Itest infopress release • On grade level assessment • 2% of all students in the tested grade

SOL Assessments • Blueprint changes • Mega-categories will combine reporting categories for assessment • EOC Geometry (50 items + 10 field test) • Formula sheet changes • Summer content review committees will review • Will be released with blueprints in fall 2010 • Will not be in effect until 2011-12

Reauthorization of ESEA • Key items calling for • development of longitudinal data systems to support a growth model for accountability • adopt college- and career-ready (CCR) standards in English and mathematics • improvement of assessments (funding available to states implementing CCR standards that are “common to a significant number of states”) • Improvement of struggling schools through: transformation, turnaround, restart, or closure

Reauthorization of ESEA • Key items calling for • statewide definitionsof ‘effective teacher’, ‘effective principal’, ‘highly effective teacher’, and ‘highly effective principal’ • the link of teacher/principal effectiveness to student growth • district-level teacher and principal evaluationsystemalignment within the state • increased emphasis on STEM and the “whole child”

Ginsburg’s research) • Evidence points to more than just a common curriculum – systems • Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum (Barbara Reys’ research) • Read more about international standards and sample assessment items

CCSS Physical Characteristics Grade-Level Standards K-8 grade-by-grade standards organized by domain 9-12 high school standards organized by conceptual categories Include both concepts (what students need to understand) and skills (what students need to know and be able to do) Standards for Mathematical Practice Describe mathematical “habits of mind” or process standards
