Medical Physics Education programs: US and Latin America Doracy P. Fontenla, Ph.D., FACMP, FAAPM Program Director for Medical Physics Education Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Associate Attending Physicist, Dept Medical Physics
Will attempt: • Address MP education in the US and Latin America • Overview of the current medical physics research/training in Latin America. • PURPOSE : information might be useful for evaluate whether IB would progress as one of the reference training/research center for Latin America.
Medical PhysicsEducation: The US Model First decision: Only research Research and clinical Only clinical If any clinical activity is aimed at, the program must be defined, implemented and monitored by four organizations: AAPM, CAMPEP, ABR, SDAMP
Relative roles of SDAMP, AAPM, CAMPEP, and ABR fortheEducationof Medical Physicists in the US: What is a Medical Physicist How best educate Physicist Certified to Practice Program accredit to educate
Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP) “ CAMPEP Mission: to promote consistent quality education of medical physicists by evaluating and accrediting Graduate, Residency and Continuing Education programs that meet high standards established by CAMPEP in collaboration with its sponsoring organizations.”
Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP) • Sponsored by the following five organizations: • American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) • American College of Radiology (ACR) • Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP) • Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) • American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
CAMPEP • Scope: • Establishment of criteria and guidelines for accreditation of graduate and residency educational programs in medical physics. • Review and approval of applications for accreditation of educational programs in medical physics to insure that these programs are meeting accepted standards for the training of medical physicists.
CAMPEP • Scope: • Monitoring of accredited educational programs to ensure ongoing compliance with criteria and guidelines for program accreditation. • Consideration in accreditation criteria and guidelines of desirable attributes of medical physicists, including research experience, educational skills, clinical expertise, and professional and leadership behavior.
Accreditation is a voluntary, non-governmental process of peer review. Objective: to ensure a program or institution has met a defined standard. Thus accreditation serves as public recognition that a program provides a quality service or education. CAMPEP offers specialized accreditation of medical physics educational programs such as degree-granting programs, clinical residencies, continuing education and short courses.

CAMPEP Accredited Programs in Medical Physics 1. Accredited Graduate Programs in Medical Physics 2. Accredited Degree Programs (MS, Ph.D) 3. Accredited Certificate Programs in Medical Physics 4. Accredited Residency Programs in Medical Physics
CAMPEP Accredited Graduate Programs in Medical Physics 3. Accredited Residency Programs in Medical Physics: accreditation of clinical residency programs in radiation oncology physics or medical imaging physics. The goal is to ensure that a residency program provides rigorous and thorough clinical training in a similar fashion to that provided by medical residency training programs. CAMPEP Accredited Graduate Programs in Medical Physics 2. Accredited Certificate Programs in Medical Physics : US (5) Exterior (1) A program of didactic coursework, identified in AAPM Report 197 S (and adopted by CAMPEP), offered by a CAMPEP-accredited graduate or residency program, intended to enable individuals with a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in physics or a related discipline to meet the didactic requirements needed to enter a CAMPEP-accredited residency program.

Certification • A Certified Medical Physicist must be evaluated by a national or an international professional certification body. • However, most of LA countries didn’t establish a certification process yet. • Where there is a certification process, different requirements are established to certify or license MP. • Brazil already has certification process but still need to update and improve it to achieve international recommendations. • The practical training is a concern because there are not enough accredited hospitals to do residency.
