Preparing for the interview • Learn as much as possible about the company, position, dept & people • Review your work experience – focus on skills, talents & knowledge • Review the facts about your resume –experience & education – what sets you apart. • Accomplishments/improvements you have implemented • Prepare questions – take pen & paper – take notes A. Preparing for the Interview • Rehearse every aspect of the process • Ask a friend to help • Practice – pay attention to the verbal & non-verbal skills • Use “action” words – implemented, initiated, completed • Take originals of resume, letters of recommendation, reviews A. Presenting Yourself • Be on time. • Your appearance – dress appropriately • Enter the room with confidence • Your presentation – use positive body language – greet with a firm handshake, introduce yourself, facial expressions, direct eye contact • Communication skills - incorporate conversation • Associate the job responsibilities with your experience/education/knowledge • Look to your notes to help you. • Be a good listener. Questions Behavioral interviewing – questions geared towards actual situations Sample questions, asked to you: • How has your experience prepared you for this position? • What is the most difficult decision you have ever had to make in a job? • What is most important to you in a job? • Tell me about some groups you’ve had to get cooperation from. What did you do? • How have you handled difficult people? • If you were hired for this job, in what areas could you contribute immediately, and in what areas would you need training? A. Questions What you may want toask: • Working Environment - If I poll employees in this dept, what would they say it’s like to work here? • Priorities of dept/position - What are the critical areas that require immediate attention? Describe a “day in the life” of the position? • Communications/Relationships – With what other depts would this person work with? Quick Tips Do’s and Don'ts • Be truthful – be honest on your replies • Build relationships – assist ALL and everyone – you never know who will interview you • Be positive – how you express & conduct yourself • Goal – convince the interviewer you are the best overall qualified candidate for the job – SELL YOURSELF Thank everyone for their time.
