Why research as a career • A high number – highly-skilled, expert researchers and scientists ~retiring stages • Young researchers ~ highly in demand • Programmes~ train agricultural graduates -researchers • Internship and PDP (Professional Development Programme) bursary (post graduate fees, research project fund & monthly allowance)

  3. Contd ….. • Research environment ~ good for career development • Acquire in-depth knowledge - field of study • Surrounded by expert scientists, senior researchers, junior researchers, research technicians • Completion of post graduate studies ~Appointed as a researcher

  4. What to expect in this career • Apply for funding (project proposal): NRF, DST, SAPPO, RMRD SA • Conduct research (field of study), project management, • Financial management of project (budgeting) • Collaborate with other researchers: Sensory evaluation, Microbial analyses & shelf-life, Proximate Chemical analyses, statistical analyses

  5. Contd….. • Presentation of research results ~ scientific congresses and symposiums (Poster/oral presentations) • Submission of research results to research project funders • Final report of the research project (Thesis, Scientific articles, patents ~ commercialisation of research project results)

  6. Technology transfer • Render services/training courses required from time to time by clients (farmers, industry staff e.g. reps, SMME) • Attend workshops, symposiums, lectures and congresses & deliver papers/posters there • Be paid-up member of SAAFoST! & keep yourself updated in your field!
