Hormone Production • What causes the release of hormones? • Nerve impulses from the senses travel to brain • Information in interpreted • Brain sends a nerve impulse to a specific endocrine gland • The specific gland releases hormone adrenaline to the bloodstream • Heart beats rapidly until adrenaline level is normal
Target Cells • Every Hormone affects a specific organ each • Hormones only fit in their target cells • Because of these target cells hormones don’t interact with other organs. • Hormones and Target Cells “fit” together
The Hypothalamus • Link between two systems • Nerve massages controlling conditions(sleep, hunger) come from the hypothalamus • Produces hormones that control other endocrine glands and organs • Plays a major roll in maintaining homeostasis
The Pituitary Gland • Just below the hypothalamus and is about the size of a pea • Communicates with the hypothalamus to control body activities • Responses to signals from the hypothalamus releases hormones • Directs other endocrine glands by hormones to do their job
Negative Feedback • The type of signal used in a heating system • Turned off by the condition it produces • The endocrine system often works this way • Stops the release of hormone by the amount of it in the bloodstream • Very Important way that the body maintains homeostasis.
Other Endocrine Organs(Look in the book p.660) • Thyroid gland Controls release of energy from food molecules during respiration in body cells. • Pancreas produces insulin and glucagon these hormones control the level of sugar glucose in the blood.
Parathyroid glands releases hormone that regulates the amount of calcium in the blood • Adrenal glands adrenal hormones trigger the body to respond in emergency other hormones balance the salt and water in the kidneys, and help controlling the amount of sugar in the blood
Ovaries release female sex hormones. Estrogen controls the change in the Teenage girls’ body Estrogen and Progesterone trigger the development of eggs • Thymus releases hormones that help fighting infections
Testes releases the sex hormone testosterone Testosterone changes the body of a teenage boy. necessary for normal sperm production
