Legislative Branch The branch of government that makes laws.
Did you know... • The Legislative Branch makes the laws. • There are two groups of the Legislative Branch: The House of Representatives and the Senate • There are 100 senators and 435 representatives, a total of 535. • When the bill is vote on it must pass both houses of Congress with a simple majority to make it a law. • When the representatives and senators meet together they are called the Congress.
Congress The Senate • 100 members • 2 from each state • 6 year term of office The House of Representatives • 435 • Number of reps from each state based on the population of each state • 2 year term of office.
For a bill to become a law • It must pass both houses by a simple majority • It goes to the President who may • Veto it • Sign it • If vetoed, it can still become a law if both houses vote to “over-ride” the veto. This takes a 2/3rd majority in both houses.
Executive Branch The branch of government that suggests laws or enforces the laws made by Congress.
The President is allowed to pass or veto a bill that the legislature sends him. The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution states that no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.
Did you know.... • There have been 44 Presidents. • There are 14 Cabinet positions. • Mount Rushmore depicts the faces of four of our former Presidents; George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. • About 50 independent agencies are attached to the executive branch. • There are nine offices or organizations directly responsible to the Chief Executive.
Nice to know and kind of fun to know • Thomas Jefferson was the first President to be sworn into office in Washington, D.C. • The President is responsible for appointing the cabinet. • George Washington took his oath of office as the first President on April 30, 1789. • There were three Presidents that had the last name of Roosevelt. • President Theodore Roosevelt gave the "White House" its name in 1901.
Judicial Branch The branch of government that decides the meanings of laws & whether the laws have been followed.
Nice to know and kind of fun to know • The Supreme Court was set up by the Constitution. • The Supreme Court was organized on February 2, 1790. • The Supreme Court building is in Washington D.C. • Various Court officers assist the Supreme Court in performance of its duties. • About 4,500 cases are appealed to the Supreme Court each year but only about 200 are heard.
Supreme Court has the right to overturn state laws and laws passed by Congress. • John Marshall of Virginia was appointed by President Adams as the fourth Chief Justice. He remained on the Court for over 34 years. • There are 13 judicial circuits, each with a court of appeals. • There are 94 U.S. district courts in the United States. • Congress decides how many judges there will be and where they will work.
