  1. Preventing Pollution • Environmental Protection Agency-an agency of the US government that is committed to protecting the environment. • Occupational Safety and Health Administration-a branch of the US Department of Labor whose job is to ensure the protection of American workers. • Creates and enforces regulations to lessen hazards, such as carcinogens, in the workplace.

  2. Reducing Air Pollution • Carpool or take public transportation. • Ride your bike or walk to nearby activities. • Remain tobacco free • Plant trees • Trees take in carbon dioxide to make food. • Provide shade that cools buildings, reducing the need for air conditioning.

  3. Preventing Water Pollution • Reduce toxic runoff by walking pets in grassy or undeveloped areas. • Pick up pet waste from sidewalks or streets. • Use biodegradable soaps, detergents and bleaches. • Help protect oceans, streams, rivers and lakes. • Dispose of chemicals properly. • Never dump down drains or sewers.

  4. Managing Waste • Reduce-cut down on the amount of trash you throw away. • Reuse-find ways to use an item you might otherwise throw away. • Recycle-change an item in some way so it can be used again. • Aluminum, cardboard, glass, paper, plastic.

  5. Conserving Energy And Water • Nonrenewable resources-substances that cannot be replaced once they are used. • Oil • Coal • Conservation-the saving of resources.

Guidelines For Home Conservation • Heating and cooling • Wear more clothing instead of turning up the heat. • Keep thermostat at about 68 degrees. • Seal leaks around doors, windows and electric sockets. • Keep doors and windows closed during summer. • Keep air conditioning at about 78 degrees.

  7. Guidelines For Home Conservation • Lighting and appliances. • Replace traditional light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. • Turn off lights when leaving the room. • Turn off television, radio, computer and other appliances when not in use. • Choose fuel-efficient appliances.

  8. Guidelines For Home Conservation • Cooking • When cooking a small amount of food, use a microwave or toaster oven. • Don’t preheat a conventional oven for longer than necessary. • Don’t open the oven door unnecessarily while cooking.

Guidelines For Home Conservation • Water • Wash clothes in warm or cold water. • Accumulate a full load before washing clothes or dishes. • Fix leaky faucets. • Never let water run unnecessarily. • Install low-flow showerheads. • Fill plastic bottles with water, seal them and place them in the toilet tank. (saves a gallon per flush)
