I. Meaning of the Word Deacon= “One who executes the commands of another, A servant, attendant, minister” Word occurs over 30 times in NT Used in two ways: Ordinary, special / official 1 Tim.3:8 Acts 6:1-6
II. Qualifications of Deacons Negative Positive Wife
1. Negative Qualifications of Deacons 1 Tim.3 (1) Not Double Tongued - Indians -“He talk with forked tongue” (2) Not Given to much wine - Not a drinker of alcohol (3) Not Greedy of filthy lucre - Honest in money matters
2. Positive Qualifications of Deacons 1 Tim.3 (1) Grave “Serious-minded” (2) Hold the mystery of the faith in a good conscience - Sound in the faith (3) Blameless No evil reports
2. Positive Qualifications of Deacons 1 Tim.3 (4) Husband of one wife Must be married (5) Rule their children and their house well Ability to train his own family (6) Let them first be proved Stood the test of time - faithful
2. Positive Qualifications of Deacons Acts 6:3 (7) Of Good Report Has a good reputation (8) Full of the Spirit Fruits are obvious - Gal.5:22-23 (9) Full of Wisdom Good judgment – common sense
3. Qualifications of Wife 1 Tim.3 (1) Grave Dignified, solemn, sound in faith (2) Not Slanderers Not a backbiter or gossiper (3) Sober - serious minded (4) Faithful in all things
II. Qualifications of Deacons These can be met Negative = 3 Positive = 9 Wife = 4 Blessings for deacons who serve well
“For they that have served well as deacons gain to themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.” 1 Tim.3:13 ASV Loved, honored, respected Pleasing in God’s sight Grow, faith increases Have more confidence & vision
