The Yanomami • Over the last six lessons we have looked at the Yanomami Indians. • We have covered everything from the where they are located to the complicated threats that are killing the Yanomami. • Previously to studying to the Yanomami you looked at rainforest and these two studies go hand in hand with each other.
The Yanomami • Located in the amazon rainforest, on the boarder of Brazil and Venezuela. • They live in large communal houses called shabono, that normally consist of immediate family and extended family. • In a world that is dominated with people who want to exploit whatever they can to profit communities and especially rainforest communities have suffered greatly.
The Yanomami • There are about 20,000 indigenous people who live in these remote communities • The shabono houses up to 400 Yanomami and as little as 25 • The shabono is built in clearings in the rainforest • Wooden beams separate the families • The shabono is not very durable leading to the shabono being re-built every 1 to 2 years
The Yanomami • The Yanomami depend on the rainforest • The Yanomami are the only community in the world that practice true polygamy. • This means that the man can be married to more than one woman at a time. • Woman do gardening and bare the children while they are growing • The men do the heavy and hard work including hunting and rebuilding shelters
Activity • We conducted a brainstorm for the first lesson on this topic. • I need you to form the same groups and add to these posters. • You need to add everything you have learnt over the last few lessons. • You may use your ipadsor research anything to assist you in this. • Remember all the PowerPoint’s are provided on the wiki spaces page for you • You need to include facts, statistics, government laws, sketchers • At the end of the lesson you will present these posters.
