  3. European Union Belgium is Europe in miniature. A kingdom, a parliamentary democracy, in the heart of Western Europe. French, German and Dutch influences have not left the country unaffected: witness the three official national languages.

  4. Flandersin the north (Dutch speaking), a flatland criss-crossed by canals, is proud of its great art cities, Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent. To the south in Wallonia (French speaking) you will find the rolling hills of the Ardennes, numerous castles, and the cities of Liege, Namur, and Tournai. Brussels-Capital Region is a three-lingual, cosmopolitan center

  5. In the past decades the unitary state Belgium developed into a federal state structure. In 1993, Belgium became officially a federal state. The country has three regions - Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels - and three communities: a Dutch-, a French- and a German-speaking community (only 70,000 Belgians speak German on a daily basis). Between Flanders and Wallonia there is a fifteen-hundred-year-old, almost unchanged linguistic and cultural boundary, separating the German from the Latin world.

  6. 10 million inhabitants. 6 million in Flanders, 3 million in Wallonia, 1 million – Brussels-CR. The presence of the Euro-Parliament and the NATO has induced many EU citizens to take up residence in Brussels. Economy is export-oriented, but Belgium also imports a lot. Main trade with: France, Germany, NL. Services sector – 70% of the GNP. 3,8 mln employed, 540,000 unemployed entitled to benefits (12 % of the working population). Low inflation, high public debt.
