Flandersin the north (Dutch speaking), a flatland criss-crossed by canals, is proud of its great art cities, Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent. To the south in Wallonia (French speaking) you will find the rolling hills of the Ardennes, numerous castles, and the cities of Liege, Namur, and Tournai. Brussels-Capital Region is a three-lingual, cosmopolitan center
In the past decades the unitary state Belgium developed into a federal state structure. In 1993, Belgium became officially a federal state. The country has three regions - Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels - and three communities: a Dutch-, a French- and a German-speaking community (only 70,000 Belgians speak German on a daily basis). Between Flanders and Wallonia there is a fifteen-hundred-year-old, almost unchanged linguistic and cultural boundary, separating the German from the Latin world.
