Atmospheric Optics GEOG 1112- Lecture 17
Light • Reflection • Refraction • Amount of bending depends on material, wavelength, and incident angle • Dispersion • Colors separate as they are bent by refraction • Scattering
Blue Sky • Scattering by air molecules • Rayleigh scattering (air molecules) • Mie scattering (dust) • Selective to shortwave (blue) light
Setting Sun • Sun sets before you see it set • Density of atmosphere bends light • shorter wavelengths (blue/green) undergo less refraction • longer wavelengths (red/orange) undergo more refraction
Mirage • Refraction of light as it passes through air of different temperatures • Vertical temperature gradient • Hot air and cold air layers • Distant objects appear shorter
Inferior Mirage • Ground warmer than aloft
Superior Mirage • Ground cooler than aloft
Glory • Ice clouds
Rainbow • Reflection of of water droplets
Aurora Borealis & Aurora Australis • Solar flares • Solar wind • Poles collect particles • Particles collide with atmosphere
Star Twinkle • Refraction
