UV-INDEX MONITORISATION OF BALKANIAN COUNTRIES Celalettin R. Çelebi , MD Ankara / Turkey
Protection of the Human Environment IntersunTheGlobal UV Project
INTERSUN, WHO’s Global UV Project • promotes research activities that will fill gaps in knowledge • quantifies health risks of UV radiation exposure • facilitates public and occupational programmes to reduce UV-related health risks • develops practical resources for sun protection in schools • promotes the UV Index as an educational tool for sun protection • To reduce the global burden of disease resulting from exposure to UV radiation

ABSTRACT Based on measurements of spectral UV irradiance at 7 different Country locations in Balkanian Region,we propose to develop a Balkanian UV Climatology.Aim of this proposal is to collect UV measurements in a database and to analyse data sets for evidence of trends in UV-Index in the Region. The deliverables of this project are relevant to search in atmospheric chemistry, biology, human health and material effects.User-friendly access to the database for these scientific communities and daily maps to public with skin health related warning/information through a website will be established.
NEED / RELEVANCE UV-Index Monitorisation is a Medical Climatological Product displaying/forecasting the changes and dynamics of solar energy.UV is recentlyannounced by N.I.H. As carcinogen. Informing Public about daily changes of UV Radiation is an important healthcare issue according to INTERSUN Project of WHO, WMO,UNEP,IARC,ICNIRP in information societies.
1- To document the organisations, societies, study groups, departments companies and institutes which have experts and instruments on UV monitorisation and try to coordinate/cooperate their work. 2- To determine the localisations of UV measurement points of each country. 3- To determine the type and quality of the instruments, sensors and meters of UV Monitorisation for each Balkanian Country.
4- To determine the model of the calculation for UV-Index. 5- To establish digital network and links from measurement points to database 6- To establish the main database. 7- To establish a free access website to announce the results of measurements and sun safety rules.
INTEGRATION The project will be operated in 7 Balkanian (Romania,Macedonia,Albany, Bulgaria, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Jugoslavia ,Turkey) Countries and will last 4 years. Integration to similar Pan-European Projects (Cost Action 713 etc.) is aimed and cooperation with the related national organisations (NGO/GO) is planned.
