General Meeting • July, 1774 Representatives from SC met in Charles Town to voice opposition to taxes and Acts • Elected reps to Continental Congress: John & Edward Rutledge, Thomas Lynch, Henry Middleton, Christopher Gadsden -All from Low Country
First Continental Congress • Began in Sept. 1774 • Gadsden urged Congress for Independence-had few supporters • Congress decided on nonimportation and nonexportation agreements • Rice (SC)-only item that could be exported
First Continental Congress • Henry Middleton (SC) was elected President of the Congress • Congress agreed to meet May 10, 1775 if Intolerable Acts were not repealed • Approved preparations to defend the colonies if war was declared • SC readied their militia
