  12. Japan Under the Shoguns How did the warrior code influence Japanese society and keep Japan from
reuniting? Who was a Shogun?

  13. The Way of the Warrior Why do you think it might be important to live your life by
a specific code or rule?

  14. The Way of the Warrior * The samurai lived by a code
called bushido, which means "way
of the warrior." * They spent their entire lives
preparing to be great warriors. * They trained fiercely, fought
bravely, and died with honor. * Their weapons were the
samurai sword and the bow and
arrow.

  15. Loyalty and Honor Daimyo with samurai If you were a samurai who do you think you'd owe your
greatest loyalty too?

  16. Loyalty and Honor * The samurai owed their
greatest loyalty to their daimyo. * If a samurai's daimyo was
murdered his samurai would
commit suicide out of disgrace
(seppuku). * Personal honor was very
important for the samurai. * They would demonstrate this
by riding into battle shouting out
his name and family.

  17. Invasions by the Mongols Samurai defending stone wall from Mongol invaders. Who were the Mongols and why do you think they would
invade Japan?

  18. Invasions by the Mongols * By 900 Japan had stopped
paying tribute to China. * In 1268, Kublai Khan sent
official representatives to demand tribute from Japan. * In November 1274, Khan sent an armada, to Japan.
But the samurai defeated his
army.

  19. Invasions by the Mongols * In 1281, Kublai Khan tried
again but his armada was
destroyed by a typhoon. * No Mongol army ever
successfully invaded Japan.

  20. Three Strong Leaders Why do you think having strong leaders is important for a
civilization?

  21. Three Strong Leaders * As the violence under Shogun
rule increased, tax revenue and
respect for the emperor
declined. * Oda Nobunaga was the first
leader to try to reunify Japan.
He failed but did reduce the
power of the Shoguns. Oda Nobunaga

  22. Three Strong Leaders * Toyotomi Hideyoshi, unified
Japan in 1590. But after he died
the peace collapsed. * Tokugawa was the leader who
finally reunited Japan under one
rule. Toyotomi Hideyoshi * He ordered the daimyo to
destroy their castles/spend most
of the year in Edo, so he could
watch over them. Tokugawa Ieyasu

  23. The Changing Samurai World With the daimyo's power diminished what do you think
happened to the samurai?

  24. The Changing Samurai World * With peace returning to
Japan the samurai were forced
to take powerless government
jobs. * In 1876 new laws prohibited
samurai from carrying swords. * Thousands of samurai
rebelled at these insults to their
honor. * Their forces were defeated
by the modern Japanese army.

  25. Important things to remember: * The samurai owed their greatest loyalty to their lord
(daimyo). * The samurai term bushido means “way of the warrior”. * The Mongol army never was able to successfully
invade Japan.
