What Are ADJECTIVES? • Words that modify nouns. • Colors • Physical Description • Personality Description • Nationality
What Do You Mean Modify? • Modifying a noun means that the adjective changes something about the noun- the color, for example. un véloorange un vélo
Agreement?? • An adjective must agree with the noun it modifies. • in number (singular or plural) • in gender (masculine or feminine) • La filleest blonde. • Les montressont roses. Noun King lowly adjective
Gender Agreement • How can “red” be masculine or feminine?? • (The same way a bed is masculine and a bedroom is feminine!) • unlit • unechambre
Gender Agreement Rules • Rule #1: If the adjective ends a consonant, add to “e” to make it feminine. • Le tapisestvert. • La chaise estverte.
Gender Agreement Rules • Rule #2: Adjectives that end in “e” don’t change. • Le tapisestjaune. • La chaise estjaune.
Number Agreement • How can “red” be singular or plural?? • Answer: The same way that it can be masculine or feminine. • (This is a tough one to accept for English speakers.)
Number Agreement Rules • Rule #1: • If the adjective ends in anything except “s”, add s to make it plural. • (just like making a noun plural) • Les réveilssontverts. • Les tables sontvertes. (still feminine!)
Number Agreement Rules • Rule #2: • Like nouns, if the adjective ends in “s”, leave it alone. • Les ordinateurssontgris. • Les lampessontgrises. (still feminine)
Remember: • Because all nouns are masculine or feminine, adjectives have to be masculine or feminine too. • Because nouns are singular or plural, adjectives have to be singular or plural too. Noun King lowly adjective
