What is a plasmid? A small circular, double stranded piece of DNA that can enter and exit prokaryotic cells. It can replicate when inside a suitable host. (i.e. a prokaryotic cell)
What is its purpose? • Genetic engineers use plasmids as vectors to transfer genes from one organism to another • This technique is used to multiply or express particular genes • An example of this technique is in the production of insulin
Replication of bacteria cells containing plasmid a) non-integrating b) The plasmids integrate into the host cell’s chromosome (i.e. viruses)
