BACKGROUND The elders of Alaska’s Bristol Bay region are predominately Native American, and a vital cultural resource to Yupik Eskimo and Aleut families. Marrulut Eniit enables elders who need assisted living care to remain near family and friends. Previously the closest assisted living facilities were in Anchorage, and transition to unfamiliar urban environments often accelerated Alaskan elders’ demise. Marrulut Eniit Dillingham, Alaska
Facilities Marrulut Eniitincludes a full-time manager’s apartmentof 800 sq. ft., and 10 handicap accessible and equipped units of 480 sq. ft. each. Each unit includes a small living area, bedroom and kitchen area. Attendant Caretakers are available 24-hours a day. Marrulut Eniit Dillingham, Alaska
Facilities Common areas include a Dining/Multi-purpose congregate living area, kitchen facilities for group dining, a separate storage area for each tenant, common laundry and whirlpool bath, and a large fenced courtyard. Administration Marrulut Eniit is operated by a 501c3 organization comprised of the agencies that contributed to the project. The Bristol Bay Housing Authority provides contract management and employs Marrulut Eniit’s staff. HUD “Best Practices” Recognition The first state-licensed assisted living facility in rural Alaska, Marrulut Eniit received the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s “Best Practices” Award in August, 2000.
