The automotive industry – clients who keep us on our toes • Large clients often have complex logistical demands requiring specific industrial knowledge. • The automotive industry offers a constant challenge. The industry has always been a driving force when it comes to developing supply chain and logistical efficiency. • Trucks, buses, cars and construction equipment are all part of Swedish core competence - and naturally, we want to be a part of that.
Bad timing for an industry day? • A job in the automotive industry generates another five jobs in other sectors. This crisis will affect us all. • The automotive industry and Schenker have a long history together - through good times and bad. We have always been able to find sustainable solutions throughout the years – and this situation is not any different. • Together we will continue to improve our collaboration, by finding ways to be even more cost-efficient and effective.
INFRASTRUCTURE FUELS VEHICLES LOGISTICS RESEARCH The road to climate neutral transportation goes through cooperation. In 2006, Schenker took the initiative to start the ”KNEG” program. On the Road to Climate Neutral Transportation Our common goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions per ton-km by more than 50 % by 2020. • A cooperation between • Preem Petroleum • Schenker • Volvo Trucks • The Swedish Road Administration • Center for Environment and Sustainability at Chalmers and Göteborg University
Schenker’s environmental commitment Schenker’s 7-point programme for Climate neutral transportations • Driving-related opportunities • Fuel-efficient driving • Reduced speed • New vehicles • Better fuels • Optimized vehicle combinations • Intermodality/ co-modality • Increased filling rates/shorter distances • Smarter city logistics
Fuel efficient driving – to use the gear shift and the accelerator consciously • A driver trained in fuel-efficient driving saves between 4 – 10 per cent fuel – provided that he/she gets continuous feedback on the fuel consumption and some encouragement. • Half the number of all drivers for Schenker are trained in fuel-efficient driving. • The haulage companies must be provided with or acquire better tools for monitoring the fuel consumption - on a vehicle or driver level. • The coming technical development will no doubt facilitate fuel-efficient driving. Hälften av Schenkers chaufförer har utbildats i sparsam körning När alla Schenkers chaufförer har en färsk utbildning i sparsam körning kommer bränsleförbrukningen att minska med ca 5%
Reduced speed A speed reduction of 2 kilometers per hour only means a 10-minute longer drive between Göteborg and Stockholm. • 1,5 per cent lower fuel consumtion in Schenker’s Swedish domestic traffic equals an emission of 4 329 000 kg CO2 • The technical development to facilitate a fuel-efficient driving must carry on. A reduction in speed by 2 kilometers an hour means a 1,5 % lower fuel consumption.
New vehicles • Within 3 – 5 years: Change all older vehicles Euro 1 & 2 motors (the diesel motor –1% per year) • within 5 -10 years: Hybrids (–30% in distribution traffic, -10% in long haul traffic.) • 10-15 years: Plug-ins in distribution traffic? What if… …it was possible to traffic the main roads at nights with larger vehicle combinations. Schenker could then reduce the number of long hauls by 25%
Better fuels • Limited supplies requires efficiency from ”well to wheel” • The fastest way is to increase blended fuels – to a higher proportion of non-fossil components • Renewable fuels of the second generation after 2015 • 2020 we count on being able to fill our trucks with diesel with a blend of a 20-30 % of bio-diesel
