  2. Loss Of Hope • “ An SS came toward us wielding a club. He commanded: ‘Men to the left! Women to the right!’ ” (Wiesel 29). • This is an example of loss of hope. This quote is about when everyone came off the train and one of the SS said women to the right and men to the left. The last thing the Jews wanted was to get separated from each other. Getting separated from each other made it more easy to deprive their moral.

  3. Changes In Elise's Character • “ I was nothing but a body. Perhaps even less: a famished stomach. The stomach alone was measuring time” • This is an example of when Elise loses his character in the story. At this point in the story Elies feels like he is just nothing but a slave and just a toy to them. He feels like he has no meaning in life anymore. This is how Elise loses his character in the story

  4. Kindness • “ ‘No,’ the man now sounded angry. ‘Not fifty. You’re forty. Do you hear? Eighteen and forty.’ ” (Wiesel 30). • Ellie tells us that, the guard who told him that Ellie wasn’t 15 but he was 18 or 40 years old, the guard told him that because he was trying to protect Wiesel from getting separated from his father, because if he told he other guards that his 18 or 40 he would be able to work side by side with his father. This kind of support from the guard show kindness for Wiesel and his father

  5. Loss of Identity • “The three veteran prisoners, needles in hand, tattooed numbers on our left arms, I become A-7713. from than on, I had no other name” (Wiesel 42). • Ellie Wiesel tells us that in the camp, they were force to get their name replace by code names who were mostly numbers. This kind of action toward the Jews, makes them experience a loss of identity

  6. Strength • “He commanded: Men to the left! Women to the right! Eight words spoken quietly, indifferently, without emotion. Eight simple short word. Yet that was the moment when I left my mother”(Wiesel 29). • Elie showed strength because he didn’t start going crazy or crying he showed no type of emotion. He felt it but didn’t show it.

  7. Cruelty • “A truck drew close and unloaded its hold, small children. Babies! Yes, I did see this, with my own eyes. Children thrown into flames”(Wiesel 32). • When Elie first arrives at Aushwitz, he sees babies getting thrown in the air used as targets, children and adults were getting burned in the pit of fire.
