Mission:To work for the long-term conservation and enhancement of biological diversity and ecosystem sustainability throughout the Greater Uwharrie Landscape, compatible with the land use, conservation and management objectives of participating organizations and agencies.

Organization of the Partnership • Forum • All partners and stakeholders • Information sharing • Steering Committee • One representative from each partner • Makes decision on organization and direction of partnership • Decisions by consensus • Work Groups • Geographically focused • Consists of “on-the-ground” folks • Includes non-partner stakeholders • Information sharing & work on topics • Look for opportunities for collaborative projects
Greater Uwharries Conservation Partnership Goals • Improve communication and cooperation • Identify and map common conservation priorities • Leverage funding and resources • land conservation • land management • land use planning
Communication • Forum and Steering Committee meets ~4x/ year • Work Groups meet every 2-4 months, as needed • Google-group email lists • Wiki-space data sharing web site
Identifying highest priority resources- “Conservation Targets” • Start with Wildlife Action Plan & Natural Heritage lists • Focus on those targets with greatest conservation opportunity in the Uwharries- consider rarity and endemism. • Experts whittle list & assign ranks, partners approve • Over 100 species, habitats and natural communities

Piedmont Longleaf Restoration • USFWS Partners program and Environmental Defense collaborate on funding • USFWS, NCWRC, the Zoo, LTCNC and NRCS find willing landowners • USFS contributes $ for controlled burning on private lands near Forest
