    1. The Classroom Performance System “That blue remote thing?”

    2. What is it? A system using infra-red remote pads to register responses to questions.

    3. How does it work? Teachers pose questions for students (shown on a projector or on paper). Students use their remote pads to punch in the answer they choose. Did they get it? The CPS records their responses and gives immediate feedback to the teacher!

    4. Why do we need it? 100% “audience participation” Instant feedback Anonymity for students Reducing paper work FUN! All kids, not just the confident ones, can attempt answers to questions in class. Teachers find out right away who gets it and who is lost. Usually, no one will confess they don’t understand in front of their classmates. The anonymity factor alleviates embarrassment and gives the teacher an accurate read on student understanding. Paper work is reduced because teachers don’t have to generate quizzes, run copies, collect and grade the papers. CPS has the ability to create reports on any assignment showing response data, even broken out in graphs. The fun factor can’t be discounted! Kids love using this little remote thing. Activities can be designed putting kids into teams to collaborate on responses and CPS will track points for each group. All kids, not just the confident ones, can attempt answers to questions in class. 5. Who will use it at Reo School? K-5th kids in Literacy through Computers classes 3rd -5th kids in Science, Social Studies, Math and Language Arts Staff at professional development and regular staff meetings Parents at PTA meetings and curriculum nights (Family Reading, Math & Science nights) Use will not be restricted to just 3rd through 5th graders in core subject areas, but it will be predominantly in those upper grades. Lower grades at Reo are governed tightly by our Reading First guidelines which dictate 120 minute literacy blocks and therefore use of this technology for the younger students will occur primarily during their Lit Tech classes.Use will not be restricted to just 3rd through 5th graders in core subject areas, but it will be predominantly in those upper grades. 6. How much does it cost? $3,995 Every CPS package comes complete with: Response pads (32) Receiver unit Software site license Software upgrades Interface with ExamView test banks Technical support Carrying case

    7. How can we afford it? Grants (Reo Network Managers are working on a couple of possibilities.) Wait for our district technology upgrade funds (Reo is scheduled for 2009, if money is available) Building budget (least feasible, I know ?) Diane has submitted a grant request to the eInstruction company, through their website. The company gives away one set a month. She is also working on another application to the Coca Cola company for a technology upgrade grant. No promises, of course. There’s no guarantee that our district upgrade money will actually come around on the cycle we are used to. And of course, the technology will no doubt be changed by then. And will any of us still be here? Hmmmm. Reo’s building budget has to stretch in a thousand directions to take care of our day to day needs. Our principal and the School Improvement team have been generous in past years to allocate funds for us to purchase a few technology items, such as our SmartBoard and the data projector. But, the pot is getting smaller each year, and our needs increase so this source is probably the least feasible.Diane has submitted a grant request to the eInstruction company, through their website.
