How are their subjects assessed? You know which subjects they are studying. Do you know how they are assessed?
‘jargon’ Linear exams- exams taken at the end of the course (most subjects are now examined in this way) Modular exams- exams taken at the end of each unit Coursework- work done, mostly in lesson time, marked either internally or externally and counting as a percentage of the final qualification. Controlled assessments- work done in exam conditions but students have seen the question beforehand and have been able to do some preparation. These can count as a percentage of the final qualification. MFL- speaking and listening exams.
‘jargon’ Assessments- as with High schools teachers will give effort and working at grades to keep you informed at regular intervals. Target grades- the grade the students should be able to achieve (not guaranteed, not a ‘ceiling’) These are reviewed. Mock exams- done in year 10 and year 11. These don’t ‘count’ towards their qualification But can effect target grades and support/intervention given. ALWAYS CHECK THAT STUDENTS KNOW WHETHER THEY ARE MOCKS.
HOW DO I FIND OUT About ASSESSMENT? The JCC website has information about each subject www.jcc@leics.sch.uk subjects Exam info School files School email
How can I help • Ask them how they are recording their homework (phone/ diary/ notebook) • Don’t believe them when they say they haven’t got any homework! Probe deeper • They could be • Reviewing lessons • Organising notes • Responding to feedback* • Revising – not just for exam time • Doing extra reading • Make sure they have somewhere to work • Make sure they go to bed at a sensible time for them • Make sure they have breakfast • Talk to them about distractions (encourage them to make sensible choices) • Help with buying revision guides
