Can we design a medium-deep survey that will allow us to explore new parameter space for galaxy detection while covering enough area to obtain statistically significant samples? Is this an important legacy for the extragalactic surveys? What science are we going to do that will excite the next generation of radio astronomers?
Goals for a medium-deep survey: • HI mass function over a range of environments • HI mass function less affected by distance errors and the local overdensity • Serendipitous science - exploring new parameter space • Deep surveying of Virgo and/or other nearby groups
Regions of interest for surveying (a few ideas to start discussion): • Virgo region complementary to broader shallow regions • SMUDGES 7˚ strip where optical dwarf galaxy data are available • Regions around nearby galaxies • Regions around other nearby groups
Survey Strategy • Observing a patch of sky • Connected regions for context • Limited number of environments surveyed • Observing a strip or strips across the sky • Without larger shallower survey it will lack context • Surveys a much greater range of environments
Observing Strategy • Driftscan observations • Well tested strategy • May not fit in with commensal observing • Step and Stare observations • Will work best in piggy-backing with pulsar observations • Will need work to design the most optimal strategy for sky coverage and most uniform sensitivity coverage
Where does it fit in? • This will also be a significant amount of time to be done right • Should this be a commensal project or is it important enough for E-ALFA to dedicate our own time to it? • How does it fit in with ALFALFA and VAVA in terms of reaching our science goals? • How do we balance the various projects?
