Warm-up 9/16/13 Write and answer the following questions: • What do a translation, a rotation, and a reflection have in common? They are transformations. • What is the difference between a translation, a rotation, and a reflection? Translations are slides, rotations are turns, and reflections are flips. Note: Warm-up Check today! – Be ready • 3 questions about rotation (9/11/13) • How many degrees was the rotation? (9/12/13) • Rotations (D) WS (9/13/13)
Translations • What action is associated with translating? Slide • Is the image in the same direction as the preimage, opposite directions, or different directions? Same direction • What are the rules for translations? For example if I want to move 5 units horizontally and -6 units vertically how would I write the rule? (x + 5, y – 6)
Reflections • What action is associated with reflecting? Flipping • Is the image in the same direction as the preimage, opposite directions, or different directions? Opposite directions • What are the rules for reflecting over the x-axis? y-axis? y=x? y=-x? x-axis: (x, -y), y-axis: (-x, y), y=x: (y, x), y=-x: (-y, x)
Rotations • What action is associated with rotating? Turning • Is the image in the same direction as the preimage, opposite directions, or different directions? Different directions • What are the rules for rotating 90 degrees clockwise? 90 degrees counterclockwise? 180 degrees? 90⁰ CW: (y, -x), 90⁰ CCW: (-y, x), 180 ⁰ rotation: (-x, -y)
Work Session • Work on the Transformations WS • Put the worksheet in the your class’s box at the end of the period
Closing 9/16/13 • You will receive a post-it note. On the post-it, write what confuses you about the three transformations we’ve talked about. • When instructed, post the note on the board for your class period. Note: Be specific! – For example, write I don’t understand how to reflect over diagonal lines instead of I don’t know how to reflect.
Homework • Review Transformations notes and bring books to class tomorrow
