1 Corinthians 16:12-24 Theme: Christ’s love for us is our duty call to love fellow saints and the lost. • CALL TO CHRISTIAN PRIORITIES (13-14) • CALL TO RECOGNIZE LABORERS IN THE GOSPEL (12, 15, 17-20) • CALL TO GREET ONE ANOTHER (19-24)
1 Corinthians 16:12-24 But concerning Apollos our brother, I encouraged him greatly to come to you with the brethren; and it was not at all his desire to come now, but he will come when he has opportunity. Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. Now I urge you, brethren (you know the household of Stephanas, that they were the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves for ministry to the saints), that you also be in subjection to such men and to everyone who helps in the work and labors. And I rejoice over the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus; because they have supplied what was lacking on your part. For they have refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge such men. The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila and Prisca greet you heartily in the Lord, with the church that is in their house. All the brethren greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. The greeting is in my own hand--Paul. If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. Maranatha. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

1. CALL TO CHRISTIAN PRIORITIES (13-14) (Summary: believers must always be diligent and ready to act in Christ honoring ways) • Be Alert/watchful: "And what I say to you I say to all, 'Be on the alert!'“ (Mark 13:37) • Against Satan • Against temptation • Watch for apathy and indifference • False teachers • For the Lord’s return
1. CALL TO CHRISTIAN PRIORITIES (13-14) (Summary: believers must always be diligent and ready to act in Christ honoring ways) • Be alert/watchful: • Stand firm in the faith: on Christ alone • Act like men: maturity, courage • Be strong: “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Phil 4:13) • Let all be done in love: giving of ourselves Theme: Christ’s love for us is our duty call to love fellow saints and the lost.
2. CALL TO RECOGNIZE LABORERS IN THE GOSPEL (12, 15, 17-20) (Summary: disciple making network needs encouraging/caring) • Background of Area and Workers (Map) • Aquila, Priscilla and Apollos • Stephanus, Fortunatus and Achaicus • Timothy and Erastus • “Be in Subjection to Such Men” • “That you would show them proper deference and regard; that you would treat them with distinguished respect and honor for what they have done.” (Barnes)
2. CALL TO RECOGNIZE LABORERS IN THE GOSPEL (12, 15, 17-20) • “Be in Subjection to Such Men” • “That you would show them proper deference and regard; that you would treat them with distinguished respect and honor for what they have done.” (Barnes) • “be subject to one another in the fear of Christ” (Eph 5:21) • “all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another” (1 Pet 5:5)
2. CALL TO RECOGNIZE LABORERS IN THE GOSPEL (12, 15, 17-20) • “Acknowledge Such Men” • “Therefore receive him in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard” (Phil 2:29) • Note the “love” of the Savior, saints and sinners motivated these people to carry on in “labor” for the sake of the Gospel… Theme: Christ’s love for us is our duty call to love fellow saints and the lost.
3. CALL TO GREET ONE ANOTHER (19-24) (Summary: passing along verbal/physical affection among saints is uplifting) • Greetings in the Lord • Holy kiss (cheek/forehead) much like a hug in our culture • Maranatha = “Lord come!” • “For the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.” (1 Jn 4:20) • Accursed (Gr. anathema) – “devoted/destined to destruction” • 1 John 2:23 “whoever denies the Son, does not have the Father”
3. CALL TO GREET ONE ANOTHER (19-24) (Summary: passing along verbal/physical affection among saints is uplifting) • Love and Grace • Paul’s love is very much like that of a father (spiritual in this case) who loves all his kids – even the wayward, rebellious or stubborn ones. • Followers of Christ must love others and extend grace or the Gospel in not genuine in us. • 1 John 5:1-3
1 John 5:1-3 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
Conclusion: Christ’s love for us is our duty call to love fellow saints and the lost. • Support, help, affection, encouragement is what we find here in our local church motivated by mutual love for our Savior who did same & much more for us. • Let’s go out this week and show this love to someone here (or outside) that we know needs it, but we have simply not done so yet/recently!
