1. Hazardous Materials Training Katy ISD Hazard Communication Program Training as Required by 25 TAC 295.7

2. What is a hazardous material? • A hazardous material may be a solid, liquid or gas. • Materials with any of these signal words on the label are most likely hazardous: caution, warning, danger. • Compressed gases are always hazardous.

3. How do I know what is hazardous? • The product label will have a signal word – caution, warning, or danger. • These words indicate that the material is hazardous and the degree of hazard. • Caution is used on less hazardous materials. Caution • Warning is used on more hazardous materials. Warning Danger • Danger is used on the most hazardous materials.

4. What makes a material hazardous? Usually hazardous materials have one of the following characteristics: • Combustible liquid or gas • Compressed gas • Explosive or highly reactive • Corrosive • Toxic (poison)

5. What items are NOT hazardous? • Food, drugs, and cosmetics are not considered hazardous materials. • Wood and wood products are not considered hazardous materials. • Consumer products, when used the same way in the work place as a consumer would use the product, are not considered hazardous. • Manufactured items which do not release hazardous materials are not considered hazardous.

6. If you select materials… • Use materials that are available through the district warehouse. • Select a material for which an MSDS is already available in the “YuckMan” MSDS Online Database. • Prevent unauthorized student access to all hazardous materials. • Store flammable materials in a flammable storage safety cabinet.

7. If you select materials… • Select non-hazardous materials. • If a less hazardous chemical is available, select the less hazardous alternative. • Purchase small containers so that material is used completely, rather than having the material “left over” at the end of the school year. • Do not bring any pesticide to school. Only pesticides used as part of the district’s integrated pest management program are allowed.

8. How can employees be exposed to hazardous materials at work? • Respiratingor breathing in the chemical • Ingesting or swallowing the material • Skin absorption through handling the material • Skin absorption from the air

9. First Aid Procedures • Employees who believe that they may have been injured by a hazardous material should seek first aid from the school nurse. • First aid recommendations are included on the MSDS for each chemical used in Katy ISD. • Medical treatment can be arranged by calling the Risk Management Department (281-396-2422). • For serious life-threatening conditions, call 911.

10. Workplace Chemical List • Katy ISD has a formal workplace chemical list for hazardous chemicals stored in amounts greater than 55 gallons or 500 pounds. • Other hazardous chemicals are listed in the online MSDS program. • Small amounts of hazardous material are kept in science labs, maintenance areas, swimming pool equipment rooms and similar locations throughout the district.

11. Employee Responsibilities • Always consider safer alternatives when selecting products • When using a hazardous chemical in a classroom, review the MSDS and have it on hand. • Ensure that proper protective equipment is available (e.g. gloves, eye protection) • Do not purchase excessive amounts of any product, to help reduce waste storage and disposal issues

12. Labels • Do not remove or deface the original product label. • When possible, select containers with silk screened labels over paper labels. • If material is transferred to a smaller unlabeled container, the smaller container must be emptied daily or the container must be labeled with at least the product name and the appropriate warning from the original label.

13. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) • The MSDS contains specific information about the hazardous material. • On the desktop of each computer in Katy ISD is a Mr. Yuck Icon with the caption “HazCom.” • This is the tool to use to find an MSDS. • Select appropriate Location: Campus or Maintenance & Transportation. • Look up the product by product name or manufacturer's name.

15. 1. Click on the “HazCom” icon to view the “YuckMan” MSDS Online Database. Finding an MSDS 2. Select the appropriate locationusing the “Locations” Quick List. Choose either “Campus” or “Maintenance & Transportation.” • 3. Use the MSDS Search tool to search for your material by product name or manufacturer. 4. View the MSDS by clicking on the selected PDF icon.
