Lesson 1Building Health Skills • What are Health Skills? Specific tools and strategies that lead to better and more informed health choices. • These skills are not just for your teen years, but throughout your entire life.
Social Health Skills • Social health skills involve communicating effectively to express your knowledge, beliefs and ideas in many different ways and forms. • THIS INCLUDES SAYING “NO” TO ANYTHING THAT MIGHT BE A DANGER TO YOUR HEALTH AND WELL BEING. • Gives some examples of what you might say no to that could be a danger to your health if you don’t.
Communication Skills • Communication is a process through which you send messages to and receive messages from others. • Effective communication not only involves making yourself heard but also being a good listener.
ALWAYS: • Clearly say what you mean • Pay attention to how you say something • Be a good listener • Be aware of your facial expressions and gestures
REFUSAL SKILLS • These are techniques that can help you refuse when you are urged to take part in unsafe or unhealthful behaviors.
You can do this by the following: • SAY NO • Explain why you are refusing • Suggest Alternatives To The Proposed Activity • Back Up Your Words Using Body Language • LEAVE IF NECESSARY!!!!!!!
Mental and Emotional Health Skills • Building Self-Esteem which is the confidence and worth that you feel about yourself. • Self-Esteem effects everything you do, think, feel and are.
Strategies for Building Self-Esteem • Examine the messages you send yourself • We are our own worst critics • Focus on things you do well • Sports • Hobbies • Art • Music • Poetry
Stress Management Skills • What is STRESS? The body’s and mind’s reactions to everyday stress. Examples: Homework Boyfriend/Girlfriend Friends School
Ways to reduce STRESS: • Rechanneling your energy • Relaxing • Laughing
Total Health Skills • What is a self-directed learner? • Having the ability to gather and use reliable health information

Setting Goals • One of the most important things we can do as you grow into adulthood is: • SET GOALS
TWO TYPES OF GOALS: • Short Term Goals: • Getting a good grade on a test • Asking that certain someone out on a date • Mending a friendship that was damaged • Long Term Goals: • College Choices • What you want to actually do when you get out of school or college • Marriage • Children
