1969-1974 Richard Nixon By Patrick Vaughan and Laura Hess
Domestic Issues • revenue sharing • end of the draft • new anticrime laws • broad environmental program. • appointed conservative Justices to the Supreme Court • American astronauts made the first moon landing • Watergate scandal
Their Implications • Revenue sharing = gave money to the states to utilize and help strengthen the economy • Less of a push towards militarism • To reduce trafficking and to create a noble means of income • Going Green; focus on maintaining the beauty of the country, and to reduce pollution and therefore global warming • Conservative Justices would help to eliminate new radical changes in the law • Signified the American push in technology (America was now capable of anything) • Signified corruption within the government, tarnished the reputation of the presidency, and forced Nixon to step down from office
Foreign policy China • China – deterioration of relations between china and the USSR • Nixon saw this opportunity to attempt diplomatic relations • He recognized China as the Peoples Republic of China as opposed to a communist nation • Spring 1971, Mao invited American Table Tennis team to China • Nixon sent Kissinger to China (assistant for National Security affairs) to conduct negotiations to the effect of repairing former relations
Foreign policy China • Nixon made an unprecedented visit to China Feb, 1972 (widely televised) called the Beijing Summit • Nixon received a personal invitation t o meet Brezhnev in Russia (also desired improved US relations due to new US-Chinese relations) USSR feared of US involvement in terms of its allies
Foreign policy Vietnam • Vietnam – Nixon could only negotiate a flawed agreement that merely interrupted, rather than ended the war • Domestic opinion divided; a majority felt the war was a mistake, people saw little progress and believed the fighting would continue for 2 more years. Racial divisions also divided the country and the Democratic loyalists were set against Nixon • Nixon tried to settle war on favorable terms – sent Kissinger to North Vietnam, he threatened to “take measures of greatest consequences” = mining of Haiphong harbor, and bombing of North Vietnam
Foreign policy Vietnam • Nixon ordered bombing of supply lines on Ho Chi Minh trail + launched worldwide nuclear alert = didn’t work to make NV yield • Publically trained an army of South Vietnamese so that Americans could withdraw • Nixon planning to withdraw troops within 18 months but Kissinger talked him out of it • 1969 Nixon mined Haiphong harbor + used B-52 to bomb North, = response to North Vietnamese army in the South • South Vietnamese withdrew from this land, North Vietnamese gained
Foreign Policy Cuba • Blockade on Cuba continued • Increase in hostility, terrorist raids, and plots to assassinate Castro
Watergate Scandal • Break in at office of the Democratic National Committee during 1972 campaign • Traced to officials of the committee to reelect the President (5 people) • Many administrative officials resigned • Nixon denied personal involvement, but he had to send forward tape recordings that proved he had tried to divert the investigation • Nixon announced on August 8, 1974 that he would resign the next day to begin “the process of healing that was so desperately needed in America” • He was the 1st president to resign from office • Summation of Watergate scandal video Nixon’s resignation speech • http://watergate.info/http://millercenter.org/president/nixon
Implications for Ford • Watergate scandal led to his inauguration as President from Vice President and he had to deal with the scandal • Ford pardoned Nixon and the public disagreed with this action • Revive the economy from depression, he needed to master inflation, self-chronic energy shortage, and he attempted to ensure world peace • Wanted to curb the trend towards gov’t intervention and spending as a means of solving problems in American society
