  2. Immunization is one of the most cost effective public • health interventions. • India Estimates (1999) • Cost per DALY gained : US$ 15-37 • Cost per death averted: US$ 514-1,233

  3. Like most developing countries, Public Sector is the primary • source for Immunization services in India. • More than 80% of immunizations are provided by the public sector

  4. Irrespective of place of residence, the inequities in coverage for basic immunization services is high.

  5. Inequities in basic immunization are more pronounced some states of India National Average for the Poorest Quintile

  6. Between two rounds of survey, immunization coverage declined across all quintiles in Urban areas. The inequities also continued to persist.

  7. In rural areas, immunization coverage improved across all quintiles, particularly among middle and fourth. The inequities, however, continued to persist.

  8. The poor/rich ratios suggest that immunization services more • pro-rich in urban compared to rural India • Between the two rounds, inequities in rural areas have increased

Despite higher average coverage in urban areas, the • inequities in basic immunization services is more • pronounced compared to rural areas. • While more in-depth assessments are required to better • understand the processes that helped in reaching the poor in • Himachal Pradesh and Orissa, lessons from these states with • relatively poor and geographically dispersed populations • suggest that it is possible to reach the poorest with basic • services even in weaker states.
