  2. 1,208 students • Rural Southern Appalachia Ohio - Highland County • 75% of county is used for agriculture. • 8.9% unemployment rate (State avg. 7.2%, Dec., 2013)* • 97.6% White, Non-Hispanic • 14.5% SWD • 45% Free and Reduced Rate Lynchburg-Clay Local Schools

  3. Focus was to implement course work for high school seniors based on skills and tools for college success. • Specific goals included increasing student success and transitioning from high school to college completion. High School/College Transition

Coursework Objectives • Increase self-awareness and self-motivation • Improve personal and self management • Identify and use college resources • Identify study skills and test taking skills • Develop an academic and career plan • Demonstrate computer literacy and effective writing skills Program Development

  5. Self- Assessment • Student utilized campus websites to locate key resources. • Students researched areas of study/degrees • Students completed FAFSA and scholarships. • Students completed pre/post outcome assessments Assignments

  7. 12 of the 12 students one year later are still attending a four year college. Where are they now?

  8. 1) To your knowledge, what % of the students who took the UNIV 1999 College Success course are still enrolled full/part-time in college? (Why do you think those numbers exist?) • 100%- Good kids, most would be successful without the course, but I received positive feedback from them. (Roush and Shope’s analysis will be shared) • 2) What benefits if any, do you think students gained from participating in this course? • Students learned about their perspective college like through the poster board activity. (students had to present a detailed background about the college of their interest, found student services, majors, course descriptions along with required courses within their major, where offices such as; housing, student services, financial aid, police were located). Students looked more into things like rec centers, dorms and little things you don’t think about when applying. • 3) Did this course offer any benefits to you as a counselor (yes/no)? Why? • Yes- I enjoyed seeing them research schools they were applying to and planning on attending. Some actually found scholarships. • 4) Would you like to replicate the college success course in your high school? If yes/no what improvements could be made to the course? • Beneficial if seniors had it maybe earlier- beginning of school year- for application process. Juniors last nine weeks to explore schools. • 5) What does it mean for a student to have college courses offered in a high school? • Gets them ready for what they see when they get out of here. School is usually pretty easy for those upper level kids. Feedback
