6th Framework Programme at Warsaw University of Technology Marta Szajnowska-Ksit, M.Sc. Centre for International Co-operation Warsaw, 10thOctober 2005
6th Framework Programme – Priority European Research Area • Genomics and biotechnology for health • Information Society technologies • Nanotechnologies and nanosciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials and new production processes and devices • Aeronautics and space • Food Quality and Safety • Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems • Citizens and Governance in a Knowledge-based Society
Submission of proposals • Response to calls for proposalspublished in the Official Journal of the European Communities • Calls have strict deadlines • Special information packages are issued for each call comprising documents, explanations and forms which are needed for the preparation of the proposal
Selection process • Proposals are evaluated and selected for funding by the EC with the help of independent external experts (peer review) • Evaluation criteria and a detailed description of the process of evaluation are published in advance • For successful proposals the EC enters into (financial and scientific-technical) contract negotiations leading, eventually, to the signature of a contract
General Information • 71 projects submitted by WUT research teams • 67 projects accepted and co-financed by the European Commission • Financial contribution of the European Commission exceeds 8,0 mln euro • 4 projects are still negotiated with the EC
Funding • Rule of non-profit and co-financing • Grant to the budget • Reimbursement rate of eligible costs is based on the cost model and activity type • WUT - AC model -> contractor may charge to the project only those direct costs which are additional to their recurring costs + flat rate of indirect costs (20% of all direct additional costs – costs of subcontracts)
WUT’s Projects per Type 21 STREP (Specific Targeted Research Projects) 13 NoE (Networks of Excellence) 11 IP (Integrated Projects) 7 CA (Coordination Actions) 7 SSA (Specific Support Actions) 4 CRAFT (Cooperative Research Projects) 3 Marie Curie Projects 2 Collective Research 1 I3 (Integrated Infrastructure Initiatives) 1 INTAS
Integrated Projects Main purpose: to support the ambitious objective-driven research dealing with different issues through a programme approach, needed to generate the knowledge required to implement the priority themes Primary deliverable: new knowledge Other deliverables:IP are expected to have a structuring effect on the fabric of European research EU contribution: 4-25 mln EUR (10 mln EUR) Average duration: 36-60 months Optimum size of consortium: 10-20 partners Financial regime: grant to the budget, paid as a contribution to actual costs
Specific Targeted Research Projects Purpose: objective-driven research more limited in scope than IPs and usually focused on a single issue (often mono-disciplinary) Deliverable: new knowledge EU contribution: 0,8-3 mln EUR (1,9 mln EUR) Average duration: 18-36 months Optimum size of consortium: 6-15 participants Financial regime: grant to the budget, paid as a contribution to actual costs.
Coordination Actions Purpose: to promote and support the networking and coordination of research and innovation activities EU contribution: 0,5-1,2 mln EUR (1 mln EUR) Average duration: 18-36 months Optimum size of consortium: 13-26 partners Financial regime: grant to the budget, paid as a contribution to actual costs
Specific Support Actions Purpose: to support the implementation of the Framework Programme; preparation of future actions, support to policy, dissemination of results EU contribution: 0,03-1 mln EUR (0,5 mln EUR) Average duration: 9-30 months Optimum size of consortium: 1-15 partners Financial regime: grant to the budget, paid as a contribution to actual costs or, if necessary, as a lump sum
Networks of Excellence Main purpose: to address the fragmentation of European research; durable integration of the participants research activities Primary deliverable: the structuring and shaping of the way research is carried out in Europe on a particular topic in order to strengthen excellence in that topic Other deliverables: because they support the work of excellent research teams, NoE will also generate new knowledge EU contribution: 4-15 mln EUR (7 mln EUR) Optimum size of consortium: 6-12 partners Average duration: 48-60 months Financial regime: a fixed grant for integration, disbursed in annual instalments on the basis of progress towards achieving a lasting integration
WUT’s Project Partners - examples • Airbus • Siemens • Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing • Volkswagen AG • Fiat Auto • France Telecom • GlaxoSmithKline Research & Development • Shell Solar • Procter & Gamble • Unilever • Dechema • Bayer Technology Services
