When I started this project I decided my theme would be “housewife away from home”, within the sixties, as the decade the model would be styled as. I researched different photographers and editorials and looked at the techniques they used. Predominantly, the photographers I looked at subverted the stereotype for the theme they were creating, choosing to go against the common grain and create something unique.
I wanted to create a housewife that was not cheery and stayed at home, but instead a woman who was away and out being a temptress. I chose to style my theme on the sixties as it was more about being free and liberal rather than repressed but also the outfits were slightly sexier . I looked at a couple of locations and found a launderette that was perfect for what I wanted, it had sixties décor and would be a great reference for a stereotypical chore a housewife might do.
I was happy with how I subverted the theme, I made her look provocative, though I could have emphasized this through adding a male model or through better use of props. When I achieved the right combination of pose, emotion and composition, the images came alive. I felt my photograph which got accepted on photo vogue had all of these elements and epitomized what the theme was about, subverting the housewife stereotype.
