THE VIETNAM WAR Juan lemus
VIETNAM WAR • vietnam war was a long, costly problem with communism regime of the north vietnam and their southern allies known as viet cong against south vietnam and their ally, the united states • the war began in 1954 (though conflict in the region stretched back to mid-1940’s) • more than 3 million people including 58,000 americans were killed in the vietnam war; more than half of them were vietnam civilians • by the 1969 more than 500,000 military personnel were involved in the conflict
what was the cause of the war • in october 1946, the french claimed their intention of reclaiming the north which meant that the viet minh would have to fight for it • the cause of vietnam war revolve around the simple belief held by the america that communism was threatening to expand all over south east asia • during this time american officials claim to view the nation as increasingly important in the campaign to halt the spread of communism
Effects of Vietnam War • american military forces were eventually sent to vietnam to help combat communism • for obvious reasons the war in vietnam had a major impact on both south and north vietnam ensured that the civilian population suffered appalling losses • it also caused a lot of protests in america opposing vietnam war
who protested • americans protested against vietnam war • mostly teachers and college students protested • african americans protested too
why did they protest • Students and teachersthought it had no point and it was senseless and cruel. the main opposition to the vietnam war was the opposition to the draft; moral, legal, and pragmatic arguments against U.S. intervention; reaction to the media portrayal of the devastation in Southeast Asia. • african americans protested against the war because minorities made up a disproportionately large percentage of the soldiers in the vietnam war. the high number of african americans and poor americans dying in vietnam angered african american leaders.
Effects after protests • in april 1967, martin luther king jr., publicly condemned the war. • in 1969 the government issued a lottery system for the draft. only those who had low lottery numbers were drafted. • more than 1.5 million students closed down about 1,200 campuses. • students were killed by national guard troops at kent state and jackson state universities
