Joint Activities 8 succesful Joint Activities (JAs) contributing to deliverables (out of 11 proposed in first year) • Study of Hybrid Optical Switch Architectures(Participants: CTI/UPATRAS - IBBT-Ghent University) • Switch and Buffer Architecture using Quantum Dot (QD) SOAs(Participants: RESIT/AIT - CTI/UPATRAS) • Tutorial on Optical Switching Technologies and Architectures (Participants: AIT, COM-DTU, DEIS-UNIBO, GET-ENST, IBBT, ICCS/NTUA, KTH, POLITO, PUT, CTI/UPATRAS, SSSUP, TUW, UC3M, UPVLC and UPCT.) • Demonstration and evaluation of a novel all-optical packet envelope detection circuit(Participants: ICCS/NTUA – CTI/UPATRAS) • Experimental demonstration of a simple all-optical clock recovery scheme(Participants: ICCS/NTUA – RESIT/Athens Information Technology) • Optoelectronic clock recovery(Participants: GET/ENST, DTU-COM) • Design and modelling of new all-optical architectures for contention resolution in AOLS nodes(Participants: IBBT/UGent, ICCS/NTUA) • Multi-domain Quality-of-Service in Optical Networks(Participants: SSSUP, COM-DTU)

Mobility Actions Total Mobility Actions in VD-S: 9 • All-optical high speed wavelength converter based on XPM in HNLF (UPVLC-DTU) • “Label preference schemes in GMPLS optical networks” (SSSUP-DTU) • “QoS Mechanisms in Label-switched GMPLS Optical Networks” (DTU-SSSUP) • Test and characterize two types of market available integrated switches based on MZI-SOA (IT-UPVLC) • All-optical wavelength conversion by Four Wave Mixing in SOA/HNLF and Investigations on the subcarrier aided monitoring in all-optical switched networks using wavelength conversion. (DTU-UPVLC) • Switch and Buffer Architecture using Quantum Dot (QD) SOAs (CTI-AIT) • Experimental demonstration of a simple all-optical clock recovery scheme (AIT-NTUA) • Test and characterize multi-wavelength conversion properties of CIP integrated 40 Gb/s MZI-SOA (TUE-IT) • All-optical high speed wavelength converter based on XPM in HNLF (UPVLC-DTU)

Plan for Second Year • Publish and present the E-Photon/ONe tutorial on “Photonics in Switching” (JA4) – to be submitted to Computer Networks on June 1 • Technical meeting at ONDM 2007 • Deliverables D3 and D4 • 5 new JAs proposed • 8 already succesful JAs continue
Scientific and Technical Impact • A consensus on future technologies for optical switching systems has formed among partners and is summarized in the tutorial paper “Photonics in Switching”. • 20 joint papers published. • 2 deliverables reporting latest research results • EU-wide networking established through meetings and mobility actions.
Durable integration • Joint Activities are demonstrations of durable integration between partners. • Many VD-S partners in submitted proposal for COST Action SWIFT (SWItches and Routers for FuTure Communication and Data Processing)
